BREEAM Assessments

What is BREEAM?

BREEAM stands for the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method. It was founded in 1990 and is the world’s leading sustainability assessment method and rating system for new and existing buildings.

It was created to “set the standard for best practice in sustainable building design, construction and operation” and is now one of the most comprehensive and widely recognised measures of a building’s environmental performance.

There are now more than 561,700 BREEAM certified developments globally to date and around 2,265,100 buildings registered for assessment since it was first launched.

How BREEAM works

Developments are assessed under a number of environmental areas from water efficiency to energy management strategy. There are 10 different categories within the assessment, including:

• Energy: operational energy and carbon dioxide
• Management: management policy, commissioning, site management and procurement
• Health and Wellbeing: indoor and external issues (sound, light, air, safety)
• Transport: transport-related CO2 and location related factors
• Water consumption and efficiency
• Materials:, including green guide ratings provided from impacts of building materials and their lifecycle impacts
• Waste: construction resource efficiency and operational waste management and minimisation
• Pollution: external air, water and noise pollution
• Land Use: type of site and building footprint
• Ecology: ecological value, conservation and enhancement of the site

Points are awarded against each category and an overall BREEAM rating is given to the development at the end of the process. The ratings include BREEAM Pass, Good, Very Good, Excellent and Outstanding.
